Handwriting Without Tears
Get Set for School Program
Three Core Learning Areas
Get Set for School is a curriculum that prepares young learners for school with three complete programs: Readiness & Writing, Language & Literacy, and Numbers & Math. These programs complement and expand the Holy Cross Academy preschool program. We will engage your child with the following strategies:
- Creative lessons that enable children of different abilities and readiness achieve
- Child friendly language and activities
- Hands-on approach that promotes active participation in lessons
- Multisensory instruction: visual, tactile, auditory and kinesthetic
Students will develop key readiness skills in early learning concepts: drawing, alphabet knowledge, colors, shapes, pre-writing, informal and formal writing, counting and numbers.
Readiness & Writing
This program is the core of Get Set for School. The handwriting component is based on more than 25 years of success with the Handwriting Without Tears program. Writing requires many skills that are essential for school: physical, language, cognitive, social and perceptual. Our Readiness & Writing program uses music, movement and multisensory manipulatives to teach all the core readiness skills including crayon grip, letter and number recognition, number and letter formation and body awareness.
Language & Literacy
This program is a wonderful complement to our Preschool curriculum. We use dramatic play, singing, finger plays, manipulatives and movement to teach children to rhyme, clap syllables, and identify sounds. We expose children to rich literature to foster a love of reading, building vocabulary and learn how books work. Children learn to use new words and develop oral language skills by listening, retelling and playing out stories.
Numbers & Math
This program is a natural extension of our preschool curriculum through the Get Set for School program. It helps build readiness for numbers, counting and visual recognition. We use manipulatives, music and rhymes to teach counting, comparisons, spatial awareness, patterning, sequencing, matching, sorting, problem solving and shape/geometry skills. Lessons in the Get Set for School curriculum give children time to play with real objects and test their ideas so that math becomes real and meaningful. Children also develop oral language skills that helps them learn about and express math concepts.
