Band Enrichment Program Information
Dear Holy Cross Academy Parents and Students-Grades 4 and 5,
We are excited to announce that we will be offering an instrumental music (band) program to our students starting this year. The program will be under the direction of Mr. Mark Hasenstab who has had over 30 years of experience in teaching instrumental music and is currently band director at Our Lady of Sorrows School. He is thrilled to be joining HCA and hopes to build a band with many students participating of which our entire school community will be proud.
This will be a marvelous opportunity for our students to become involved in an activity that will give them countless hours of enjoyment and will teach them many skills. These skills will enable them to become better students academically and socially and will help them develop a rich, cultural awareness of the wonderful art that music is.
There will be a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 6; 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Providence School for all those interested or curious. Everything in detail will be explained at this meeting.
In the meantime, we hope that the following commonly asked questions and answers will give you a clear understanding of what is involved in this program.
How will Band be scheduled?
Grades 4 & 5 will have band class once a week after school from 2:50 to 3:50 p.m. At Our Lady of Providence, band will meet every Tuesday; Seven Holy Founders - every Wednesday and St. Michael - every Thursday.
How long will students be expected to remain in the Band program?
The only way to build a really excellent band is for the students to make a long-term commitment.
We hope to see all members remain in the band until they graduate from 8th grade. Minimum time commitment will be one semester.
What instruments will be taught?
Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone Horn, Tuba and Percussion which includes Drums and Mallet or Keyboard Percussion.
What happens if too many students sign up for the same instrument?
You will notice that the sign-up form on the next page asks students to give 2 choices. In the event of an overabundance of one choice, some students might be asked to go with their 2nd choice. This is a rare occurrence.
How do I acquire an Instrument?
1. Large Brass and Woodwind instruments will be rented from Our Lady of Sorrows School. Depending on the instrument the cost is either $10.00 or $20.00 per quarter.
2. A rental program through Nottelmann Music Company will be offered. Depending on the instrument, the cost ranges from $35.00 to $60.00 per month.
3. Some students may already have an instrument available for their use.
Will there be a membership fee for the band program?
A quarterly fee of $50.00 will be charged. Money from this fee will help HCA outfit the band with necessary items like music stands, music, percussion equipment, supplies and other misc. items.
Hopefully you will find the above information helpful in knowing what is involved in the HCA Band program.
The meeting on Thursday, Sept. 6; 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Providence School will hopefully answer any further questions you may have. Mr. Hasenstab will have a presentation with the students prior to this meeting during the first week of school at their respective campuses to promote interest in the band program.
Mr. Hasenstab will need to speak with each student and parent to decide instrument choice and source. Therefore, it is important that if you cannot attend this meeting and your child is interested, contact him at email@example.com or ph. 314 302 5419.
